Spring Garden Mill (1872 - 1955)

Newtown

Spring Garden Mill covered bridge was built in 1872 and lost in 1955 during Hurricane Diane. It was a Burr truss bridge.

Bucks County records show specifications were published for a bridge to be completed at that location in late 1872. When examined by county engineer Oscar Martin in 1919, it was listed as spanning the Neshaminy Creek on Township Road, on the road leading from Newtown to Richboro in Newtown and Northampton Townships.

The Spring Garden Mill covered bridge had an interior length of 189 feet with two spans. Although the state acquired the bridge in 1936, it didn’t demolish it. Instead, the bridge was left in place when a second newer bridge was built, and a family bought the covered bridge. When the bridge was lost in 1955 during Hurricane Diane it was being used for storage.
